Steve started sailing and racing yachts as a junior member at Royal Gourock Yacht Club in 1981. He is a fully insured, commercially endorsed, RYA Yachtmaster Offshore with thousands of miles under his belt including Baltic Sea and Atlantic Ocean crossings. He is a keen racer and active member of Royal Southern Yacht Club. He is also an RYA Cruising Instructor and provides own boat tuition as well as RYA certification in conjunction with a local training centre.
His professional career started as a meteorologist in the British Army. He went on to serve with UK Force Artillery as an Arctic Warfare Specialist. Resigning from the Colours in 1995 he pursued a sales career which saw him rise to senior management. The opportunity arose to enter the leisure marine industry in 2005. Starting with a UK builder of racer/cruiser yachts that moved production to Dubai he sold new and used yachts in the UK and The Netherlands. He qualified as an Accredited Member of the Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents in 2006 where he regularly gives talks on new boat sales. In 2009 he founded The Special Boat Service Limited, brokering used yachts and new yachts by a Finnish builder. In 2012 he was appointed the exclusive UK distributor for Saare Yachts.
On a personal note, he was born and raised in Scotland. After travelling extensively around Europe with the British Army he settled in England, “because it hardly ever rains, you can wear shorts and flip-flops for 6 months of the year and the pubs are the best in the world”. He settled in Hamble in 2005 where he lives with his pet Doberman, Brèagha. If he is not out sailing on boats or in the yard working on boats, he will likely be found in his office or in the yacht club, talking about boats!
Steve’s background, qualifications and experience make him ideally suited to offering support and guidance through every stage of yacht ownership from deciding on a suitable craft, through how to fund it, insure it and find a suitable berth, to maintaining it and most importantly, gain the most pleasure form sailing it. His friendly and relaxed yet ‘can do’ attitude inspires confidence and engenders comradery.
